We all know an aging parent or friend who is growing less and less confident on the road as they age. But many Americans struggle to give up driving because it’s such a crucial piece of their independence, as well as their main source of getting to work, play, and everything in between.
It’s also worth noting that transportation is costly; it's the second largest expense in retirement.1 This means alternative solutions may need to be sought even before driving becomes unsafe for clients. You can begin introducing tech-driven solutions that have emerged from the on-demand economy as part of retirement planning for many aging clients. By doing so, you can help ensure that even when they're unable to drive, your clients can still have access to the people, places, and things that make life meaningful.
Options For Clients Who Don't Drive
Uber and Lyft are ride-hailing services with free smartphone apps to order a ride. These services are less restrictive than public transportation because they can get a client from point A to point B directly. This can motivate clients to continue doing things they enjoy, not just the necessities such as doctor’s appointments or grocery trips.
In addition to getting clients where they need to go, technology can bring products and services right to your clients. Grocery shopping is a prime example. Getting to the store is a challenge in itself. Then, it can be difficult to navigate aisles and shelves, followed by balancing bags before even getting back home. Instead, services such as Instacart or AmazonFresh, and many local grocery store programs, will deliver fresh produce, groceries, and day-to-day items right to their doorstep.
Help Those Who Are Hesitant to Try Tech Solutions
The best way to introduce these services is to help your clients use them. For example, rather than explaining the concept, order an Uber ride with clients to show them how easy it is. Or, try out a grocery delivery service so you can offer a firsthand account of the ease-of-use for the overall experience. In other words, lead by example.
Keep in mind that some of your clients could also benefit from these services from a part-time, flexible employment standpoint while they’re still able. In fact, Uber has stated that some of its most popular drivers are retirees. So even as these services help clients who lack mobility, they aren’t limited to that role; they can be just as beneficial to other clients looking for alternative work (and social) options.
