Communicating with boards of directors on behalf of our clients has long been a part of sub-adviser Wellington Management's ESG research process. While letters to boards remain a powerful tool, we see direct engagement as an effective way to enhance discussions about long-term, material issues over which the board has oversight. Investors increasingly expect directors to be available for direct engagement. For us, conversations complement our ongoing discussions with management teams and provide a lens to assess a board’s effectiveness and competence, which is challenging to do using company disclosures alone.
Important Risks: Investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal. • Risks of focusing on investments that involve sustainability and environmentally responsible investment criteria may influence investment performance relative to a fund’s benchmark or competing funds and expose a fund to increased risks related to downturns or other adverse developments in that market segment.
